Pannalal Mahto hails from a humble farmer family in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand. His early exposure to birds and a compassionate act of treating an injured grey partridge sparked his lifelong passion for ornithology and conservation.

Career and Achievements


Birdwatching and Conservationist

Known as the “Birdman of Jharkhand’
Mahto is a distinguished birdwatcher and conservationist with extensive experience in avian communication. His expertise includes mimicking the calls of over 40 bird species, understanding their threat, mating, fight and happy mood calls.


Collaboration with Forest Department

Works closely with the Forest
Department on bird and animal
rescues, and capacity building
programs.


Community Involvement

Actively participates in bird festivals, awareness programs, and the training of forest guards and bird caretakers. He has also installed artificial nests in every household in his village to promote bird conservation.


Bird Rescue Efforts

Provides free bird rescue services in Jharkhand, reflecting his deep commitment to avian welfare.


Collaborations with Wildlife Photographers

Has done birdwatching with internationally acclaimed photographer Vicky Roy and budding wildlife photographer Ayush Singh.
